Our Missionaries

At Calvary Old Town, we believe in fulfilling Jesus’ call to “go into all the world and preach the gospel.” Our missionaries are men and women who have answered that call—serving locally and globally to share the love and truth of Christ.

On this page, you’ll learn more about the missionaries we partner with, the work they’re doing, and how you can join us in supporting them through prayer, giving, and encouragement. Together, we can shine the light of Jesus to the ends of the earth.

Pastor Wes Bentley

Wes Bentley, a former Marine, first traveled to Africa in 1996. He delivered basic provisions, and

most importantly, hope to predominantly Christian people in South Sudan, who were suffering at the hands of Islamic jihadists. Before Wes's work in Africa, he served as a missionary in Russia before realizing a greater need in South Sudan. Wes founded Far Reaching Ministries (FRM) in 1998. To change the nation's course, he began a Bible school for the South Sudan army chaplains.

Since then, ten classes have graduated; over 400 chaplains deployed throughout South Sudan.

Currently, FRM is ministering in seven of the ten most dangerous Muslim countries in the world. In South Sudan, we have had 69 staff members killed.

smolin charitable foundation

Born in the Soviet Union, Vitaliy Smolin is a third-generation, born-again, evangelical Christian. His father was a Gideon brother and pastor. His grandfather spent seven years in a Siberian concentration camp because of his Christian testimony. A U.S. citizen raised outside Sacramento, CA, Vitaliy nearly died at the age of 26 and, as a result, dedicated his life to Christ.

In 2009, Vitaliy and his wife, Nataly, received the call to go to Ukraine, and by August of that same year, they had left everything they knew and moved their family of five across the globe to Ternopil.

“When the war broke out in 2014, Ukraine had [almost] no army,” Vitaliy stated. “It rose from necessity. We went to the war to serve the soldiers and helped them physically, mentally, and spiritually.” Through a series of divine appointments, Vitaliy was introduced to chaplains and chaplain training, and by 2019, Ukraine had an established law enforcement chaplaincy in place. Vitaliy now serves on the front lines of the war as a chaplain to the soldiers, protecting and providing for the people of Ukraine.

My name is Max Gorbunov. In 1996, I worked as a translator at a conference called “Christian Ethics in School” and was presented with a Bible. I started reading 3 chapters from the New Testament at home every evening and had days when I received the answers to my questions! In two months, on March 26, 1996 God entered my life and I received Jesus Christ as my personal Savior while on my knees in prayer at home. Two months later, the Lord gave me a chance to visit a couple in Moscow that I was translating for. By that time they knew that there was a Calvary Chapel in Moscow. Calvary Chapel was where they used to go to when they were in the United States. I really enjoyed the services at church and started praying for a Calvary Chapel in Omsk. George Bryson, head of Calvary Chapel Church Planting Mission (CCCPM) in Russia, came to Omsk that summer. We spent a day talking and praying together about a Calvary Chapel in Omsk. Our first church service at Calvary Chapel Omsk was on March 2, 1997. The man I was translating for a year before became our first pastor. In July 2001, the Lord called me to pastor the church in Omsk. Our first outreach was in 2002. Since that time, we have had outreaches every year and the fruit is amazing! The Lord has been adding to the number those who are being saved outreach-by-outreach! We look forward to all God has for us in the future.

ends of the earth ministry - james nyika

Ministering in Sudan to the unreached tribes.James Nyika was born in Sudan during a civil war. During his 20s he fled from Sudan to Ethiopia and lived there for many years as a refugee traveling from place to place to find basic sustenance. Not long after that James was hired by a group of American missionaries from SGWM to work in a refugee camp in the neighboring country of Uganda. James begun his ministry as a construction manager and after a few years began attending the Bible college. He graduated at the head of his class and felt an overwhelming call from the Lord to return back to the war zone to bring the gospel to remote unreached tribes.

In the past few years God has begun saving members of the Taus tribe that previously had no Gospel witness. James also oversees a medical clinic that ministers to tens of thousands of people every year as they receive free medication and hear about the love of Jesus Christ for the first time. James and the national missionaries are targeting 1 million unreached souls. Please pray for them and his hurting people.

jewish outreach international

Born in France into a Jewish family, Cyril's parents divorced when he was two, and his mother took him and his little brother to San Francisco to live with their grandmother. After his Bar Mitzvah (celebration of manhood), his focus in life was redirected to partying. This hedonistic lifestyle continued into college at the University of California Santa Barbara where he studied Art. By the end of his sophomore year he was disillusioned with the party lifestyle and started searching for the meaning of life in various philosophies and religions (except for Christianity), as Jews are taught by the rabbis that Jesus is not for them. After studying with some rabbis in Jerusalem while on a trip to Israel to study Art, Cyril concluded that the Bible was Divinely inspired and became a Modern Orthodox Jew. He thought that he would find spiritual fulfillment in following the Mosaic law, instead, he was confronted with what a great sinner he was. After graduating from the College with an Art Studio degree, Cyril became a full-time artist in Emeryville, California. Even though he was a successful artist, he became more and more aware of a dark power that was trying to destroy him through self-destructive addictions, and that scared him.

Meanwhile, Cyril had started looking into Jesus following a vision of Him he had while in the desert crying out to the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. In 1993, Cyril met a true Christian who wasn't Jewish, but worshiped the God of Israel. She made him jealous for Jesus with a true faith he saw emanating from her and sent him some books about Jesus. These books showed Cyril how Jesus fulfilled the many Messianic Prophecies in the Old Testament, and after a visitation in a dream that showed him that it was TIME TO COME HOME, his eyes were open, and he accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior. Cyril was immediately set free from the sin that enslaved him and was radically transformed to serve the Lord Jesus with his whole being. Cyril's been a passionate evangelist ever since and has seen 100s of people come to faith in Jesus since his Salvation.

Presently, Cyril's married to another Jewish believer in Jesus named Rhonda since 1999. They have three children: Gabriella 21, Daniel 18, and Yoseph 14. His wife works as a part time counselor and teacher, while homeschooling their children. Cyril is presently doing front-line evangelism at Venice Beach and Huntington Beach.

tenth hour project

Tenth Hour Project is an 8 month discipleship program for young adults. Students will spend eight months on an epic, life-changing adventure that will radically transform their future. This short season, spent in community with like-minded believers, and devoted to seeking a deep and authentic relationship with Jesus, will result in a complete change of perspective for your life's true purpose and mission. We desire that each of our students walk away from this experience with the confidence that, whether you are called to be a pastor or a plumber, God desires to use your life for His glory.

the joshua fund

The Joshua Fund was founded by Joel and Lynn Rosenberg in the summer of 2006. The desire of their heart was to mobilize Christians to “bless Israel and her neighbors in the name of Jesus, according to Genesis 12:1-3.

In this famous passage from the book of Genesis, the Lord promised to bless those who bless the children of Abraham and curse those who curse them. In Matthew 19:19, Jesus instructed His followers to “love your neighbor as yourself.” In Matthew 5:44, Jesus told His disciples to “love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.” In Matthew 25:31-46, Jesus exhorted His followers to feed the hungry, give water to the thirsty, care for strangers, clothe the naked, care for those who are sick, and visit those in prison.

Seeking to obey these biblical commands, the Rosenbergs established a non-profit educational and charitable organization that works closely with Jewish and Christian allies in Israel and the Middle East, as well as Christian allies around the world.
